Army Institute of Law was established in July 1999 by the Indian Army under the aegis of Army Welfare education society (AWES) at its interim location at Patiala. In July 2003, the Institute shifted to sector 68, Mohali. On December1, 2003, the Mohali campus was inaugurated by H.E. Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, the then President of India. The Institute is affiliated to Punjabi University, Patiala and approved by Bar Council of India. With ‘Aspire and Achieve’ as its motto, the Institute has grown as a Centre of Excellence in the field of legal education.

Mission
- To impart high quality, comprehensive and interdisciplinary legal education, research and practical analysis to enable the students towards application of the knowledge of law and justice as an instrument of social, political and economic change.
- To promote among the students, academic excellence, discipline, personal character, high sense of ethical and moral values, rule of law and the objectives enshrined in the Constitution of India.
- To produce law graduates possessing the core competencies essential to embark on the practice of law, Judicial or Civil services, or as officers in the Armed forces and Corporate sector.
- To promote co-curricular activities for holistic personality development of the students.
- To strive to be a centre of excellence in the field of legal education by adopting all such things as are necessary and contribute to the attainment of all or any of the above objectives as an institution of higher learning.
Governance
- The institute is established under the aegis of the Army Welfare Education Society (AWES) and functions under the patronage of Headquarters Western Command, Chandimandir.
- There is a three tier hierarchy for the governance of the institute: GOC-In-C, HQ Western Command, Patron-in-Chief, AIL; COS HQ Western Command & Patron, AIL; and MG AOC, HQ Western Command & Chairman, AIL.
- At the Institute level, there is Principal, Registrar, Placement Officer, teaching and non-teaching staff.

ADMISSIONS
- The institute has its own National level Law Entrance Test- LET for admission to BALLB programme for Army and All India Civil category. For Punjab Resident Civil category, the admissions are done through Centralized Counselling by the University, designated by the Department of Higher Education, Punjab.

Research Initiatives
Various centres established to promote research in specific disciplines and areas of law. These centres regularly conduct webinars and competitions to equip students with skills to understand various nuances of the field of law and social sciences.- ACRSS: The AIL Centre for Research in Social Sciences (ACRSS) as a society, functions with the vision of bringing to the forefront key social, political and economic issues, conducting in depth research on them and educating our community about the same.
- ACGE: AIL Centre for Gender Empowerment is an endeavour to promote awareness about gender issues and widen the scope of discourse on gender in society fostering a spirit of inclusivity.
- CRCLG: The Centre for Research in Corporate Law & Governance (CRCLG) has been created with the objective to promote interdisciplinary research in the field of corporate law & governance.
- CRCLP: The Centre for Research inConstitutional Law & Policy(CRCLP), is created with theobjective to promote researchand discourse in ConstitutionalLaw and Policy.
- AIL Research Society in the institute headed by 2 faculty members who guide students to write research papers for various journals and for participation in national and international seminars.
